Gloria Steinem famously said that “Power can be taken, but not given. The process of the taking is empowerment in itself.” While love without power can be sentimental, power without love can be abusive and tyrannical. How do we combine the two so that we can act with integrity and courage? How can love, courage and power co-exist?
Pregs Govender, as one of South Africa’s foremost “truth-sayers”, is uniquely positioned to talk about power and how it can be exercised responsibly. Pregs is Deputy Chair of the South Africa Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), her awards include honorary doctorates in Law and Philosophy for her humans rights activism since 1974, the first Ruth First Fellowship and the Fullbright New Century Scholarship for the Global Empowerment of Women. She is author of Love and Courage, a story of Insubordination (Jacana)

Monique Theron is originally from a local community on the Cape flats, Monique had a substance abuse problem for 8 years before turning her life around after a church group meeting. This was the first step in inspiring her to channel her energy into using social media tools for social good and she has not looked back since. We are running our 2011 conference in CT tomorrow so no, the 2012 programme is not out yet. We’ll start working on it quite soon though. We do accept exhibitors btw.
