Twitter for Good by Claire Diaz-Ortiz

Reviewed by Debby Edelstein

Biz Stone, cofounder of Twitter, Inc., writes in the foreword to this book: “Claire Diaz-Ortiz was my first choice to lead our Corporate Social Innovation and Philanthropy team because she passionately believes that by democratising activism, Twitter can help us all make the world a better place”.

In a world where more individuals have access to mobile phones than to clean water, the power of 140 characters can’t be underestimated.

The most exciting potential of all social media is its ability as a force for good rather than boosting sales and building brands. So for that reason alone this book falls in my category of “books that make me jump”.

But even for users who want tips for breaking through the clutter rather than changing the world, this little book offers great insight about how to do so.

How often should I tweet? Biz Stone suggests “as often as you eat” and try to limit it to three times daily!

There are lots of little gems from twitter celebs and some other names you will recognise too.

I was delighted to see South Africans @moniqueross of @shesthegeek, (who spoke on a panel at #Welead Cape Town this year) and @marlonparker of @RLABS too as case studies of the difference Twitter can make in transforming lives.

I’d like to suggest that @melanieminnaar’s Twitter Blanket Drive #TBD features in the Twitter for Good sequel or, at the very least, that @ClaireD and @melanieminnaar meet each other on twitter.

This is after all the greatest power of the twitterverse, bringing people together so that they can achieve great things together. Thanks to @ClaireD for providing us with a great template of how to do so.
