Most organisations have a set of Values on their walls. Very few are able to make them come alive. Very few are able to make them resonate in the hearts and minds of their people. Very few are able to see them reflected in behaviour. Very few are able to see them positively influence their bottom line.
So how to get them off the walls and mouse pads and screensavers and into the Heart and Soul of the organisation? The answer is Values Conversations…
Values Conversations are a highly practical method for bringing the Values into day-to-day business interactions. By introducing Values into conversations that are already happening, the Values come alive and stay alive.
There are three types of Values Conversations.
Inspirational stories
- Stories are engaging, inspiring and uplifting. People remember stories. In this process stories of success, positivity and inspiration that reflect the capacity for staff members to respond with Mastery in situations of challenge and pressure, are shared in a number of forums throughout the organisation. These stories are linked to the Values of the organisation and reflect their being lived.
Values Decision-Making Conversations
- These conversations involve bringing the Values into decision making, problem solving and strategy discussions in order to speed up and enable more creative focus in these discussions. This is a very simple and yet very profound strategy.
Values Performance Management Conversations
- This involves truly understanding how the Values are linked to what people do, how they act and how they make decisions, to enable them to understand how to implement their roles and responsibilities more effectively.
Managers are coached in the method of having Values Conversations in groups of four people. The small size of the groups is necessary in order to facilitate:
- Intensive learning.
- Powerful take-out.
- Effective engagement of all participants.
- Effective follow up and embedding of the process.
The primary method for having Values Conversations is called Strategic Questions. Strategic Questions is a communication tool, as well as leadership and management technique, developed over the last 12 years by Mark Kahn in a multitude of different organisations. It is a method that enhances dignity, respect, the taking of responsibility and the empowerment of people, all of which improve the bottom line.
Note: This workshop can be facilitated in-house.
